Uday Kotak’s career began in the early 1980s when he decided to venture into the financial services sector, despite India’s then-closed economy. He initially joined his family’s cotton trading business but soon realized his passion lay elsewhere. In 1985, at the age of 26, Kotak founded Kotak Capital Management Finance Ltd., which later became Kotak Mahindra Finance Ltd.

Starting with a modest seed capital of less than $80,000 borrowed from family and friends, Kotak focused on bill discounting and gradually expanded into various financial services including investment banking, stockbroking, mutual funds, car finance, and life insurance.

A significant milestone in Kotak’s career came in 2003 when Kotak Mahindra Finance Ltd. became the first non-banking financial company in India to receive a banking license from the Reserve Bank of India, transforming into Kotak Mahindra Bank.

Under his visionary leadership, the bank grew exponentially, becoming one of India’s largest private sector banks with a diverse range of services. In 2014, Kotak Mahindra Bank further solidified its market position by acquiring ING Vysya Bank in a $2.4 billion deal.

Throughout his career, Kotak has been recognized with numerous awards for his contributions to the financial sector, including the Ernst & Young World Entrepreneur of the Year (2014) and the Economic Times Business Leader of the Year (2015).
