Early Life

Mukesh Dhirubhai Ambani was born on April 19, 1957, in Aden, Yemen to Dhirubhai Ambani and Kokilaben Ambani. His family belonged to a Gujarati Hindu community that moved from Yemen to Mumbai, India in 1958.

Ambani spent his early childhood in a modest two-bedroom apartment at Bhuleshwar, Mumbai, where his family lived a middle-class life. Despite their humble beginnings, his father Dhirubhai went on to establish Reliance Industries, which would later become one of India’s largest private sector companies.

Ambani attended the Hill Grange High School in Mumbai and later enrolled at the Institute of Chemical Technology (UDCT) in 1976, where he obtained a BE degree in Chemical Engineering. He then pursued an MBA at Stanford University in the United States but withdrew in 1980 to return to India and assist his father in building Reliance Industries.

From a young age, Ambani was exposed to the business acumen of his father, who started as a small trader dealing in spices and yarn. This early exposure and the values instilled by his father laid the foundation for Ambani’s future success as a business tycoon.

Career with Reliance Industries

Mukesh Ambani joined Reliance Industries in 1981 at the age of 24 after being called back from Stanford University by his father Dhirubhai Ambani to assist in the family business. He played a pivotal role in the company’s backward integration journey from textiles into polyester fibers, petrochemicals, petroleum refining, and oil and gas exploration and production.

Under Ambani’s leadership, Reliance set up the world’s largest grassroots petroleum refinery at Jamnagar in Gujarat, with a capacity of 660,000 barrels per day integrated with petrochemicals, power generation, port and related infrastructure. He further steered the expansion of this refinery complex to an additional 580,000 barrels per day capacity, making it one of the world’s largest refineries at a single location.

In the mid-2000s, Ambani led Reliance’s diversification into organized retail with the launch of a pan-India retail network spanning multiple formats like groceries, lifestyle, electronics, and jewelry under the Reliance Retail brand. Today, it is the largest retailer in India with over 12,800 stores.

Ambani’s most significant disruption came in 2016 with the launch of Reliance Jio, a 4G VoLTE telecom service that triggered a digital revolution in India by offering affordable high-speed data. Under his leadership, Jio has become the largest mobile network operator in India.

Apart from his core businesses in Reliance Industries, Mukesh Ambani owns the Mumbai Indians cricket team in the Indian Premier League through Reliance’s subsidiary companies.

Criminal Offense Allegations

In February 2014, the Aam Aadmi Party government in Delhi filed a criminal case against Mukesh Ambani, the then Oil Minister Veerappa Moily, and other policymakers for allegedly colluding to inflate gas prices from the KG basin. An FIR was lodged alleging criminal offenses related to pricing irregularities.

However, the Solicitor General of India at the time stated that the case filed by the Delhi government was illegal and a threat to India’s federal structure. Reliance Industries also called the allegations “shocking” and denied any wrongdoing.

Reliance Foundation

The Reliance Foundation, founded by Ambani in 2010, focuses on education, healthcare, rural development, and other social initiatives across India.

Reliance has set ambitious targets for achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2035 and investing heavily in renewable energy sources like solar, hydrogen, and more.

Through Network18, Reliance also owns multiple news channels like CNN-News18, News18 India, and other media assets.

Personal Life

Mukesh Ambani married Nita Ambani (née Nita Dalal) in 1985. The couple first met when Nita participated in a dance performance that Mukesh’s father Dhirubhai Ambani attended. Impressed by her talent, Dhirubhai arranged their marriage soon after.

Mukesh and Nita have three children together:

  • Isha Ambani (born 1991) – Twin daughter, married Anand Piramal in 2018
  • Akash Ambani (born 1991) – Twin son, married Shloka Mehta in 2019

The Ambani family is known for their lavish celebrations, with Isha’s wedding in 2018 featuring a private performance by Beyoncé and an estimated cost of over $100 million.

Mukesh is a strict vegetarian and teetotaler. He is deeply religious and seeks his mother Kokilaben’s blessings every day before leaving for work. The family observes a tradition of spending Sundays together.

Mumbai Mansion “Antilia”

Antilia is the iconic 27-story residence of the Ambani family located on Mumbai’s exclusive Altamount Road. Valued at over $1 billion, it is one of the most expensive private residences in the world.

The 400,000 sq ft property was designed by architects Perkins and Will and Hirsch Bedner Associates. Its unique design was inspired by the sun and the lotus. No two floors have the same layout or ceiling heights.

Some of Antilia’s key features include:

  • 3 helipads and a dedicated air traffic control
  • 6 floors of parking that can accommodate 168 cars
  • 50-seat private theater
  • Full-service spa and salon
  • Ballroom and multiple lounges
  • Yoga studio, ice room, and multiple swimming pools
  • 4 floors dedicated to hanging gardens
  • Staff of 600 to maintain the property

The lavish interiors feature rare materials like crystal chandeliers, marble, and mother of pearl accents. It also houses a private collection of artworks by renowned Indian artists.

Antilia has drawn criticism for its opulence amidst Mumbai’s slums, with some calling it a display of wealth disparity. However, it remains an iconic landmark and a symbol of the Ambani family’s immense success.
