Early Life

Shiv Nadar was born on July 14, 1945, in Moolaipozhi village, Tamil Nadu, to Sivasubramaniya Nadar and Vamasundari Devi. His father ran a small textile trading business, which provided a modest upbringing for Nadar.

Despite the financial constraints faced by his family, Nadar’s passion for technology and education was evident from an early age. He pursued his early education at Town Higher Secondary School, Kumbakonam, and later at Alango Corporation Higher Secondary School, Madurai.

For his high school education, Nadar attended St. Joseph’s Boys Higher Secondary School, Trichy. Demonstrating a keen interest in engineering from a young age, Nadar went on to receive a Pre-University degree at American College, Madurai, and subsequently earned a degree in Electrical and Electronics Engineering from PSG College of Technology, Coimbatore.

Shiv Nadar’s professional career began in 1967 when he started his career at the Walchand Group’s College of Engineering, Pune (COEP). However, his entrepreneurial spirit soon led him to leave his job and establish HCL (Hindustan Computers Limited) Enterprises in a garage in August 1976, alongside his friends Ajay Chaudhary, Arjun Malhotra, Subhash Arora, Yogesh Vaidya, S.K. Raman, Mahendra Pratap, and DS Puri.

This bold move marked the beginning of what would become one of India’s largest software services providers. Initially, HCL focused on manufacturing calculators and microprocessors. By 1980, the company ventured into the international market, starting with IT hardware sales in Singapore.

Under Nadar’s leadership, HCL Technologies evolved from a hardware company into a comprehensive software services organization, marking its presence on the global IT map. Today, HCL Technologies boasts a revenue of $9.7 billion, making it one of India’s leading software services providers. The company’s success is a testament to Nadar’s vision, innovation, and relentless pursuit of excellence.

Throughout his career, Nadar has been recognized for his contributions to the IT industry and philanthropy. In 2008, the Government of India honored him with the Padma Bhushan, India’s third-highest civilian award.
