Shahid Khan was born on July 18, 1950, in Lahore, Pakistan, to a middle-class family involved in the construction industry. His mother was a mathematics professor, and his father owned a shop that sold survey and drawing equipment. In 1967, at the age of 16, Khan moved to the United States to pursue higher education at the University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign. 

With only $500 to his name, he spent his first night in a $2 room at the local YMCA and took a job washing dishes for $1.20 an hour to make ends meet.

Flex-N-Gate

In 1978, Khan founded his own company, Bumper Works, which specialized in making car bumpers for customized pickup trucks and body shop repairs.
