Leonid Arnoldovich Fedun was born on April 5, 1956, in Kiev, Ukraine (then part of the Soviet Union). He began his education at School №1 in Baikonur, graduating in 1972. Fedun then pursued a military education, graduating from the military-political faculty of the Rostov Higher Military Command School in 1977.
